Maia’s Descent Is No Laughing Matter

Like many young men in the 1990s, I found actress Maia Campbell to be one of the more attractive young black starlets on television. Early on, I discovered that she hailed from the Greater Washington Metropolitan area just as I did and that factoid endeared me to her as well. Of late Maia Campbell has fallen out of the public eye, and has been unfairly ridiculed by her poor life choices fueled by her bout with Schizophrenia. The daughter of late bestselling author Bebe Moore Campbell, Maia found fame on the LL Cool J vehicle In The House. For 3 seasons, the show enjoyed some mild success and Maia Campbell was a prominent fixture of the sitcom. Once the show ended, Maia worked bit parts in television and small movies, but nothing more.

I am not going to play reporter here and try to guess what happened beyond that point. What I do know is that in the last three years, nude photos of an obviously inebriated Campbell and a very recent video of the actress has appeared on the Internet. The gossip blogs, Twitter, message boards and news outlets (such as The Examiner) have all had their say to the inner workings of Ms. Campbell’s fall. We don’t know what’s leading her down this path nor do we know if she’s ever had adequate help – at least as far as what’s been released publicly. However, what is quite telling is how much of my Twitter feed was filled with hurtful jokes about her condition. The blogs and their comment fields were also filled with the same insensitive and lame commentary found in the linked Examiner piece above.

I immediately felt sorrow for Maia Campbell after viewing the video and wanted nothing more than to protect her. It triggered an almost instinctive brotherly reaction. It was if I saw my little sister on that screen and just wanted to snatch that camera away from her antagonist and whisk her away. There wasn’t anything humorous about this scenario. There wasn’t a reason to make this a Twitter topic of the day. It didn’t have to become this ugly display of humanity – anonymous keyboard cowards levying all types of hurtful, insensitive words towards Maia. I’ve just read that there’s a prayer campaign for Maia Campbell and that’s great. I’m not a religious person but this is obviously a step in the right direction so I support it fully.

Many of us know a Maia Campbell, a young person lost to their own devices and lacking the help, love and care needed to rise above whatever demons ails them. Are we to look at Maia Campbell with pity or are we to act when we see this pattern in our respective cities and towns? What did you truly feel when you saw Maia in that state? What would you do if you saw it? Are you witnessing something of this nature now? Are you out there helping to prevent more lost souls? Are you content with reading the insensitive comments and hashtags on Twitter? I know I’m not. I know that any time I can help a person – young or old – I’m going to give whatever time I can spare. I don’t see how we can look at this as a laughing matter. Moreover, for those of you that I know who choose to see humor in such a sad situation, you’ve lost a huge chunk of my respect.

It's a Wu-Tang week here. Designer Logan Walters didn't like the original Wu-Tang covers (I am a little insulted by this, but I digress..), so he designed new covers based on the Blue Note aesthetic for import into his itunes. Really great work on most of these.

""Killah Hills"—This is another one of my favorites. It's a very special song as far as the album's concerned because it's long as hell and has no hook. It's up-tempo and is straight through. My cousin Life who did the hook on "Cold World" also did some singing on this too. This song has a lot of depth in terms of sound 'cause we used to layer weird shit over it.

For example, myself and Killah Priest were in the city one day with a portable ADAT recorder I just bought. We were just walking around, going to stores, buying water, juice, whatever, and just recording the random stuff, you know, just picking up sounds and shit. I think we recorded the Hells Angels riding by [us] too. RZA was in a restaurant talking to some guy, and we were banging forks on the tables, and we just recoded all those sounds too [laughs]. So we incorporated all that into the production.

As a song, it's a street story, but not told in a regular street way. I'm talking about slanging on the block, but not just your average street dealer. These were more sophisticated cats. Some of it came from a documentary I saw on the infamous Pablo Escobar. He was sending judges intimate photos of their wives and things like that. I think this is [probably] my first real Mafioso track. It's like a dense, short film."

My father used to chase me, trying to claw me like this wrestler Killer Kowalski from when he was young. He told me about how this guy would get your stomach inside the 'claw' and wrestle his opponents into submission. I always remembered this story, and when Killer Kowalski died earlier this year, I thought of making a poster for my father. I finally got around to doing that today. This is from one of his most famous matches where he kicked the referee, boxing legend Jack Dempsey, who had to be hospitalized. The R.I. Auditorium was where sporting events were held until the early 1970s, when the Providence Civic Center was built.

I've never seen this film, just released on Criterion, though I've heard of it. The reviews aren't great; more interesting to me is that it's based on a memoir by French novelist Romaine Gary, husband of the actress Jean Seberg (from Godard's Breathless).

Sylvia Adams of the Evil Monito blog describes better than I could, "...in 1968, a German shepherd sauntered into their home. And in a strange twist of irony, the beautiful canine that graced their lives, on compulsion, viciously attacked the couple’s friends who happened to be black. It finally dawned on them that this dog had been programmed as a young pup by racist white policemen–a loathsome practice done behind close doors and a brutal reality of racism in America. When Seberg realized what transpired, she was heartbroken."

"...what made her so damn intriguing was her political activism; particularly her heavy involvement with the Black Panthers during the Civil Rights Movement. Her activities inevitably brought her under the scrutiny of the notorious J. Edgar Hoover and the Feds, who tried multiple times to slander her name in the public eye. Still she continued her clandestine meetings, held right in her Hollywood home; around the same time that John Lennon had famously held ties with Bobby Seale.

No one suspected this petite movie star with the face of an angel would be so strong in her political resolve. She fought valiantly against the racism that covered America like a heavy, wet blanket. Not the least dampened, she endured, even as the Feds leaked stories that she was impregnated by one of the Black Panthers, whose cause she fought for. When her child died at birth, she insisted on burying the infant in a glass coffin, to show the world their bald-faced lies."

She committed suicide at age 40. very sad.
